Dr. Robert Giardino, M.Ed., DCP
CCC, CCS, RCC-ACS
Registered Clinical Counsellor & Clinical Supervisor
Doctor of Counselling & Psychotherapy
I provide online trauma-informed, relational counselling for men, adolescents, adults, and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals navigating identity, stress, grief and loss, trauma, and complex emotional experiences from Kelowna, British Columbia.
My work is grounded in self-compassion, cultural context, and the belief that resilience is built through understanding rather than judgment.
Who I Work With
I support individuals experiencing emotional distress, identity development, and life transitions within personal, social, academic, or cultural contexts.
Men’s Mental Health
Many men are taught to manage stress privately and to equate strength with emotional control and self-reliance. While these messages can be adaptive, they can also limit connection and increase isolation.
I work with men navigating shame, self-criticism, relationship challenges, academic or professional pressure, and questions of identity. My approach supports emotional resilience that includes vulnerability rather than avoiding it.
Adolescents and Young Adults
I work with adolescents and young adults navigating periods of growth, transition, identity development, and increasing expectations around independence, performance, and direction. These stages of life often involve heightened pressure, uncertainty, stress, and questions about belonging.
Therapy can support emotional regulation, self-understanding, and resilience during times of academic, relational, and personal change.
Queer and Trans Clients
My practice is 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming and grounded in respect for diverse gender and sexual identities. I work with individuals navigating identity development, minority stress, family dynamics, and systemic barriers.
My work is informed by over two decades of supporting and advocating queer and trans individuals across educational, clinical, and community settings. You will not need to educate me about the basics. Your lived experience is centered and respected.
Common Presenting Concerns
People seek counselling for many different reasons. I work with individuals navigating a range of concerns, including the following:
- Anxiety, worry, and chronic stress
- Depression, low mood, and loss of motivation
- Emotional regulation and overwhelm
- Shame, self-criticism, and identity concerns
- Trauma and complex trauma
- Burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress
- Vicarious trauma among helping professionals, including healthcare workers and first responders
- Grief and loss
- Neurodivergent experiences (e.g., ADHD, autism-related challenges)
- Relationship and interpersonal difficulties
- Masculinity-related stress and emotional suppression
- Substance-related concerns when they intersect with mental health
- Suicidal thoughts or ideation, approached with care and attention to safety
This list is not exhaustive. If you are unsure whether counselling with me would be a good fit, you are welcome to reach out with questions.
My Approach
My work is grounded in trauma-informed, humanistic, and constructivist approaches that prioritize lived experience, relational context, and cultural influence. I am particularly interested in how gender norms, institutional environments, and social expectations shape emotional expression, help-seeking, and psychological well-being.
My doctoral research explored masculinity and self-compassion, with attention to how emotional resilience can be reframed as strength rather than vulnerability. In my work, self-compassion is not about self-indulgence or avoidance, but about developing a more sustainable and honest relationship with oneself.
I approach therapy as a collaborative and reflective process. Together, we work to understand patterns of distress, develop insight, and cultivate practical ways of responding to emotional challenges with greater clarity and agency.

I bring a background in post-secondary mental health, clinical practice, experience in acute mental health settings, and applied scholarship to my work with clients and supervisees. My approach is grounded, collaborative, and attentive to the broader contexts shaping people’s lives.
I aim to create a therapeutic space that feels respectful, thoughtful, and steady — particularly for those who may be uncertain about reaching out.
What to Expect in Therapy
Therapy is not about having the “right” words or knowing exactly where to begin. Sessions are paced collaboratively and focus on understanding patterns, building insight, and developing practical ways of responding to emotional challenges. You are not expected to share anything before you’re ready.

What Happens After You Reach Out
